Funds advised by CVC acquired a 25.01% stake in Evonik Industries from RAG-Stiftung (RAG Foundation) in September 2008. Evonik's core business is in specialty chemicals, with additional activities in residential real estate (Evonik Real Estate). Evonik further continues to hold a 49% stake in Germany's fifth largest power producer, having sold a majority stake in this business (formerly Evonik Energy) in December 2010.
Evonik Chemicals is the world's largest specialty chemicals company. Most of Evonik Chemicals' business lines hold leading positions in attractive markets. Evonik Real Estate owns and manages a residential portfolio of 60,000 apartments and holds a 50% stake in THS, another German residential property company with 76,000 flats.
Evonik is active in countries around the world, with Germany as its most important market. The company is headquartered in Essen, Germany. Following the divestiture of its energy business, Evonik employs approximately 34,000 people globally.
In the midst of the worst global economic crisis since the 1930s, Evonik Industries remained on course and even hoisted new sails. Our aim is to develop Evonik from a conglomerate into a global leader in specialty chemicals.
