In January 2006, CVC Funds co-led the acquisition of waste management company AVR from the Rotterdam Municipality. In February 2007, AVR merged with collection company Van Gansewinkel, resulting in the formation of the largest Benelux waste management company, Van Gansewinkel Groep (‘VGG’).
The group is active throughout the waste management chain of collection, processing/recycling and final treatment landfill. VGG is predominantly active in the Netherlands and Belgium but also has smaller, attractive positions in CEE countries (Poland, Czech Republic), France, UK and Portugal.
VGG is processing more than 9 million tonnes of waste annually. Following the divestment of the incineration activities, the core of the business consists of the collection activities and the treatment and recycling activities, giving 77% of its waste stream a ‘second life’. Van Gansewinkel is the largest glass recycler in Europe and has market leading positions in the recycling of white and brown goods.
