El Árbol

In October 2002, CVC Funds acquired an 80% stake in El Árbol. El Árbol is Spain’s eighth largest food retailer and a leading player in the west of the country, operating over 450 branches and employing some 7,000 staff. Today, it has its own brand label, ‘Super’.

The company was founded in 1941 in León, Spain, and later merged with the Spar group in 1959. The majority of the supermarkets serve as medium local convenience stores, mostly found in small and medium-sized towns.

In November 2006, CVC sold El Árbol to Madrigal.
