A powerful digital transformation for a greener future

PKPE is one of Poland’s largest energy companies, responsible for managing and developing critical infrastructure for Polish rail transport. It owns and maintains 21,500 kilometres of power lines and over 800 substations and employs more than 4,000 people.

CVC recognised PKPE as a nationally important asset with the potential of for operational transformation and growth, and acquired 93% of the business in 2015. During CVC’s ownership, the company was converted from an analogue based organisation to a modern, efficient, digital infrastructure leader. This was achieved through multiple value creation initiatives and approximately PLN 4 billion of capex investment, including:

  • The building of a best-in-class management team and a development of highly engaged, skilled and committed workforce.
  • Investment in PKPE’s digital capabilities to improve quality, service levels and efficiency, including advanced data analytics systems and AI-based algorithms to support the safety of the distribution network and rail traffic.
  • The improvement of PKPE’s ESG credentials, culminating in a Gold rating by the leading sustainability ratings agency, EcoVadis, and the establishment of Poland’s strategic Green Railway® programme
Quotes

PKP Energetyka’s continuous growth is no coincidence, it is the result of implementing a carefully planned company transformation process. It would not have been possible without the huge commitment of the entire team, which believed in the vision of development. Quality, safety, commitment, efficiency - these four values have accompanied us from the beginning.

Full-scale change brings sustainable profitability

Over its seven-year partnership, CVC and the PKPE management team successfully transitioned the company from an inefficient state-owned utility to a world-class, technology-driven operation.

In early 2023, with PKPE fully ready to be the backbone of the transformation of Poland’s railway power industry, CVC completed the sale of the business to the state-controlled and largest power producing company in Poland, PGE.
